Alys finds her tall, dark, handsome employer too attractive with his intelligence and appalling sense of humor, but she doesn’t believe he could be interested in a tall, odd-eyed female like her. There’s an engaging cast of secondary characters and a couple of other romances. Mary Jo Putney does an excellent job portraying the inner demons that plague Reggie. I read this book and had no idea, until the end, that it was actually a reissue of an older story, originally published in View all 23 comments. I wanted to give it five, but there were a few things that got on my nerves – although I think it’s because I just read an MJP title a few weeks ago, and the same thing that annoyed me about her writing in that book was in this one. Okay, that’s a bit harsh as Putney is nowhere near so careless.

We appreciate your feedback. It does get a little preachy but Bill W would be proud. When Reggie is gifted Strickland by his cousin, he leaves off his destructive raking for a short while to go and visit it. Alys Weston is running from her past, and Reggie Davenport is fleeing his future. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. But she’s taking care of three wards – Merry, Puteny and William.
But just as Reggie is the star of the the rake mary jo putney in the story, so Mr. After earning degrees in English Literature and Industrial Design at Syracuse University, she did various forms of design work in California and England before inertia took over in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has lived very comfortably ever since.

I don’t know what else to say other than this is a really good book, and I highly recommend it. Known as the “Despair of the Davenports”, Reggie has no prospects.

There was also a secondary love story for Merry, which was great.
And Reggie’s charm really kept this book afloat. Completely distracted me from my homework, but it was just so wonderful.
